How it works: sound waves are aimed at the injured area to restart healing in tissue that has stalled. It's used alongside exercise to rebuild the tissue.
Conditions we see
Plantar fasciitis: heel pain that has lasted months despite rest and stretching. Shockwave stimulates healing in the stalled tissue, alongside foot and calf strengthening.
Stubborn tendon pain: Achilles, knee, or elbow tendon pain that won't settle. Shockwave restarts the repair process while exercise rebuilds the tendon.
Calcium deposits in the shoulder: calcium builds up in a shoulder tendon and causes pain when you lift your arm. Shockwave targets the deposit to reduce pain and restore movement.
Plantar fasciitis, Achilles and patellar tendon pain, tennis or golfer's elbow, and calcium deposits in the shoulder.
It varies from patient to patient. Dr. Barrera will recommend a number at your first visit based on your condition and how long you've had it, and track your progress as you go.
It isn't right for everyone. Dr. Barrera screens for pregnancy; a pacemaker or other implanted device near the area; cancer in or near the area; bleeding disorders or blood-thinning medication; infection, an open wound or broken skin at the site; a recent fracture or blood clot in the area; a cortisone injection in the area within the last 3 months; and, in children and teens, bones that are still growing near the area.
Usually not. It's combined with exercise to rebuild the tissue, and often with other hands-on care.
